This piece is a map of the world with two cherry strips at top and bottom.

This is my second try at ever carving anything. I had two chisels to do the whole thing with, 1/4” and 1” stanley chisels. I found the picture online, got a large printout at office max and taped the image onto the Pine boards. I cut away the ocean and shaded the water in with pencil. I then went around and used a wood burner to touch the shorelines on the map. Once I did that, it was pretty easy to use a chisel to pop out the ocean. I left the ocean very very rough to give a wavy effect. The compass rose is wood burned. All of the narrow lines (around Antarctica) are wood burned. The verse on the top is wood burned, using the same method of printing, cutting, shading and going from there. The ocean is stained with several coats of Minwax Jacobean. It has a polyurethane finish*. (see last paragraph)

I was thinking about making this either a desktop or the front of a desk, but now I am considering just putting a frame around it and donating it to my church. The verse at the top is a reference to how Jason and his friends were accused of turning the world upside down because they proclaimed Christ as King. I thought that was a neat charge against a person so I went with it for the design.

I made quite a few mistakes, but that is the process of learning for you. I didn’t know anything about finishes and thought that I could just pour polyurethane over the top to give it a bar-top finish. Boy was that interesting! I know better now. The house smelled unbearable for about two weeks, until it actually cured. I set a box fan up to get it to cry quicker but all that did was make the top ripple. I guess that is okay over the ocean. My idea is to hang it high up where no one will notice. Any suggestions on how to fix or alleviate this mess? Do you think if I pour the bar-top appoxy over the top that it might be rescued? -If not, oh well.

I LOVE your map. As a woodworker and a retired social studies teacher, i am truly impressed. For your next challenge you need to carve an upside down map. Google McArthy’s upside down map, you’ll be surprised.

That was interesting. I guess he was just tired of people telling him that he was from down under.
