The wood I used is walnut. I sanded all the parts a lot, so my project is very clean and smooth. I used biscuit joints to combine the pieces together, and pocket hole joints to hold the project together. I cut the bottoms out of the legs with a bandsaw to add some features. The final touch was tongue oil. I added many coats of it, so it would soak in and really give off a shine.
