Howdy lumberjockers,
I recently received some curly maple (last week) and automatically knew what I was gonna turn it into. This is my version of a Maloof / Hal Taylor Rocker. The spindles are walnut and laminated like Hal’s but virtually all the shaping is closer to Maloof’s. The accent wood is walnut (as are the spindles), and everything else is curly maple. The grain in the chair is really exceptional, but I am not much of a photographer so you can just use your imagination I guess. I also shortened the rockers on this chair by just nocking off the flattened spot so the chair takes up less room in a house. Finished with 7 coats of Maloof oil.

Nice work – the maple is gorgeous.
I have a similar item on the bucket list… I have the plans from Hal taylor, and also the plans from Charles Brock…. thinking of a bit of a fusion of the designs like you did – I like Hal’s back braces, but the true Maloof ‘recurve’ of the rocker tails, and the head rest and coopering the seat boards…
Well done.

As always, another spectacular piece of woodworking from you Zack. It’s always a pleasure to see your projects, you have become a master & your work shows it.

Beautiful chair…always think these represent the pinnacle of woodworking. Can’t believe you went from lumber to chair in just a week? You are fast!

As with above comments,
Nothing the matter with the fotos—-you are a genius to complete that beauty in just 7 days—perhaps even a God.

Thank you all for the comments. I have built several of these but I do feel this is my best one yet! also drdirt, i do like the true maloof rockers more but i figured i would try something a bit different on this chair. if i were to build only one it would have the laminated spindles and the longer rockers for sure.
Have your say...
