Had this “fiddlewood” (so-called because they make violins of it ? so I was told) for years and years.
It had been sliced into about 6 sides (10 to 12 mm thick), and an end-piece of the log (actually a side-piece, diagonal to the bark), which had interesting figure, was left uncut. Well, I liked the figure, which looks like flowing long blond hair, so cut it thin and shaped pieces together for the lid.
The side-pieces were wide enough that I could make the lid-top and lid-side a perfect figure join, y’know by cutting 45s on the 20mm and 15mm pieces. This looks great and I hope to use it on many more items.
“Decorative hinges” ? Never again !!
Lined the top with satin and bottom with padding and satin .. it’s not so garish as in the photo.
It is fairly big: about 26×22 x 8.5 cm.

Nice lookin’ box. Like the grain pattern and overall look. Thanks for sharing!

That is beautiful wood, and a beautiful box. Why won’t you use that type of hinge again?
Have your say...
