When I set out to make this address sign as a Christmas gift to my father, I had no idea how to do it. In my mind it was easy. Trace the letters on a piece of wood, grab my router and bang it out. As it turns out, there is more to it than simply plunging a router in and free-handing it. I made five practice signs on scrap wood using different techniques. I tried different router bits at different depths. I just couldn’t get it right. I ended up making a template out of very thin plywood that I used along with a router bushing, to get smooth lines. The look on his face when I gave it to him was worth the extra effort. I finished it with several coats of a polyurethane and mineral spirits mix. I am very pleased with how it turned out. As a bonus, every room in my house is now labeled. Could be handy if I hit my head and forget where I am. :)
