I say attempt #1, because I really enjoyed this project and I’m working on a few more. A big thank you to Andy for his amazing instructional blog.
Body is walnut, “medallion” is quilted maple, and the handle is bloodwood. Splines are maple and bloodwood.
I pretty much followed Andy’s instructions the whole way, the only variation I added was the vertical splines that show on the top of the box. Definitely a learning experience, I got a little crazy with the shaping and had to replace the original bloodwood handle after I carved into the spline that was holding it on. But the new one came out pretty good.
Finish is BLO and a whole bunch of semi-gloss lacquer….

You did some wonderful work on this beauty. In principal it is like Andy’s now famous box design, but your own version with the ripple effect is something new and I think you can be proud of producing something unique from what has now become an iconic design. Well done. A great example of how things work here on LJ.

Lucas, fine, fine work. I like the way you continued the ripples from the side to the top.

Just stunning. Can never have enough shaping in a box like this. Your’s is fantastic.
Well done.
Blogs and words are one thing….......still waiting for the one guy to step up and make a video of his shaping…...might you be that guy?
