Wine Crates

These wine crates were a Christmas present for my dad. I built these with the idea that they could be a dual use, either a crate or a wine rack. My brother and I were going to forge some handles for the sides for carrying, but dad liked them better as a rack.

I looked up a lot of wine crates online and tried to emulate a couple that I liked. The wood is all pine from Menard’s, finished with BLO. The grids are half lapped and glued. The rest is all screwed. Our parents stacked them with the open crate on the bottom, holding half gallon jugs. My mom really appreciated the fact that at least a few of the bottles were organized.

I will caution anyone building for wine bottles. I may be the only person in the world that didn’t know that some bottles are taller than others. Measure several kinds before deciding on dimensions.

Nice work. They look sturdy enough that you could drive a truck over them without any damage.

Thank you. I don’t know about a truck, but I did stand on them to make sure that they wouldn’t collapse full of red wine.
