My Mom visited and brought me an ugly hunk of wood from a tree they cut down (pic 5). They painted it with brown latex to keep it from cracking. I had no idea what to expect so I started turning to find quite a beauty inside. She asked to keep the center “pedestal” for displaying a trinket. I believe it was an elm tree that was starting to spalt.

My soul died a little that day when I found out that the rest of the tree had been turned to firewood. :(

Sealed with BLO and rubbed with badger balm.

Completed March 2012

I guess the ugliest pieces of wood have the best grain. I can see some of the curl in the picture of it painted, but other than that, you’re right; no idea what it would look like. I was wondering why you left the middle, so I had to read it. I wonder if the rest of the tree had the same amount of figure. I guess now it doesn’t matter. Nice save on this piece anyway. I like it.
