Figured maple and wenge growler tote

I can never decide whether or not to feel guilty when blatantly copying another Lumberjock’s project. My wife got me a growler for Christmas and so I naturally had to build a tote for it (which would also give me the excuse to buy a second growler). I did some searching around and came across 7footer’s design.

I had some scrap wenge lying around and went to a local hardwood shop and picked up some awesome figured maple. This wood has figure that gives Kate Upton a run for the money! I made a few design changes to make the tote my own (dado bottom, through tenon) but there are some mistakes with the handle which makes 7footer’s work superior.

Anyway, I got to use it for the first time last night at a New Year’s party. It was a good conversation piece with the local Oregon hipsters.

That is the nicest carrier I think I’ve seen. Looking at the link you posted, I’d say that this is your design. I can only imagine how much attention you’re going to get at the brewery. You did really excellent work on this.

Great design! What did you use for a finish to get the figure to stand out so well?

Excellent tote. Gorgeous maple. Beautiful workmanship.

Also good going on giving credit to the LJ who inspired you. I remember when he built his. I almost wanted to take up drinking again… Almost.

^Lol Bucket!

I just saw this post, fantastic job, dang that maple is beauty, and a great contrast with the maple and wenge … Thanks for the shoutout. I can imagine how difficult it was to shape that wenge handle! I’ve struggled with the handles a lot, definitely the toughest part to get right.

What part of Oregon are you in?
