I had this cheap backsaw that I hardly ever used, mostly because the plastic handle was very uncomfortable. The saw cut pretty good though, so I decided to replace the handle with something more comfortable and betterlooking. I had some scrap beech countertop laying around, which was just the ticket. I sawed out and rasped and filed and sanded (And then sanded some more. Then some more. And then some more) until the handle had the desired shape. I cut the plate a little shorter to remove some weird diagonal it had near the tote. The saw nuts are bookbinding bolts which I found -much to my surprise- in the local hardware store, and work great. Finish is one coat of linseed oil (thinned with mineral spirits), followed by a couple of coats of tung flooring oil (oil varnish mix I suspect), then some wax. This saw will now see A LOT more use in the shop…

Nice job. I have a saw with a plastic handle that I have been avoiding. It too cuts well but the handle needs replacing. I hope you don’t mind if I plagiarize your idea. Thanks for sharing!

Great work, this makes a nice looking saw. Does the handle redesign help with your sawing accuracy?

Good job! Looks much nicer than plastic and feels better too.

Wonderful job on the handle upgrade
