I have a nearly new niece. She’s only a few months old but is a beautiful child already. This Christmas I decided to try my hand at making an old world sled that is sort of a baby buggy but with runners. I decided to use oak as I have a lot of it around and it bends readily. I looked for some on the internet to get an idea of a style. The sled has aluminum rails under the bent wood runners and sports a handle that flips back at an angle and forward to pull it. I also attached a rope that is held folded on the front brace with velcro straps. My sister (the baby’s grandma) made the padded cushions. The sled is finished with two coats of spar varnish.

I’ve made a video of it’s construction HERE

-- The smell of wood, coffee in the cup, the wife let's me do my thing, the lake is peaceful.

Great job. This should give your niece several years of enjoyment. Made a similar sled for my grandson. Now 13 years later it is still used as part of their Christmas decorations.

Have your say...
