In Germany, when your age ends in a 0 (20, 30, 40, etc) it’s a big deal. Generally, the person with the birthday throws a big party and friends and family come together to celebrate the milestone. Inge and John, one couple in our family celebrated their 70th birthdays (in the same month) and I wanted to make something special for them. I decided to make his and hers dresser valets. The dark one is made from Chechen Rosewood and the lighter one is from quartersawn Sycamore. The rosewood was scrap from a bed a made a couple years ago and the Sycamore came from The Woodworkers Club in Rockville, MD. They always have something nice there and the staff knows how I really like the unusual or highly figured woods so they put them aside for me to look at.

The tops and drawers are lined with leather which I really think makes for a classy piece. It also deadens the sound when you toss your car keys on to it. I branded the bottom as well which the entire family thought was a very special touch. Overall I think they turned out pretty good. Inge and John both loved the valets and they use them every day.

The valet plan came from a back issue of a woodworking magazine but I can remember which one. If someone really wants to know I will go through and find it. Just send me a comment and I will try to look it up.

Hope you like them!
