Black Walnut Knife Block

My new in-laws have a serious deficiency in quality cutlery at their house. To remedy the situation, I bought them a starter set of kitchen knives from a well-respected maker, but the set didn’t come with a knife block.

No worries there, for I have the tools to get the job done! I knocked this together from some black walnut scraps that were laying around the shop. The slots were cut on the table saw before the cheeks were put in place. I should have made the slots a but wider than 1/8” (maybe 3/16” or so), but they should do ok.

Finish was a sanding to 120 grit followed by card scraping, then a coat of boiled linseed oil. This is the first project I’ve finished in that manner and I doubt it will be the last now that I see how nice it looks.

Hope they like their Christmas present.

Thanks for looking!
