I got an ‘inexpensive’ carving set from lee valley last week, and realized I needed a mallet to give me boost. I turned this out of an old pallet runner. I’m not sure what kind of wood it is, very dense though, my mitre saw had to put in some work to cut this length off. I wasn’t sure what the wood looked like under the rough exterior and old marks and stains, but it came out pretty decent underneath. I finished with some Minwax Tung oil, not sure if that was the best finish, but I had some and I thought it’d be a little better then just beating the raw wood. I’d take suggestions on that if anyone has any!

Good beater, looks like maple, is it one piece?

Rad, yeah it’s one piece, I always thought of maple as being just lighter coloured unless it had some spalting but this is half light and half dark grains. At least I have an idea what the rest of the rough cut board looks like.

Have your say...
