While making my last bunch of cutting board and Pizza Peals I was asked if I could put together a Checker Board.
I told the guy asking I would be happy to. I normally laminate my boards so the edge grain is the cutting surface. So I figured it would not take much more time to laminate the checker board. While cutting out the strips for the Checker Board I decided they would make a nice looking cutting board as well. I ended up making 3 boards that could be used as checker boards as well as cutting boards. I ended up making 8 square cutting boards, 2 Round cutting boards, and 3 checker Board/cutting boards, and also 6 Pizza Peals. I haven’t sold any of the Checker Board/cutting boards, but they were fun to make.

It looks like you do the same as I do on the cutting boards. Some people just put any color or width together in mix/match fashion. I like to make my boards look “balanced” by using the same colors & widths on either side of the center line.
My wife says it’s because I’m anal, but I like to think of it as “orderly” LOL

It’s probably just a bad habit, or something. I just pretend it is 35 years of doing my best to please customers.
I sell lots of them, don’t make any money but it keeps me out of trouble.

My wife is a Baker and has been selling at our local Farmers Market. I figured if we had to be there might as well set up a table with wood stuff on it as well. Plus my wife bakes only Gluten free goods, so I always told everyone that everything we sold was gluten free. Well it made me laugh at least (need to be able to laugh at your own jokes in case no one else does).

Thanks for commenting, Todd

Respectfully, since you do really clean work, you should be spending your time making end grain cutting boards. Hundreds of years of butchers can’t be wrong.

I see pizza paddles with edge grain, but not cutting boards. Just my opinion.
