Another batch of 25 Freedom Pens headed to our troops.

Four of these are plastic resin, a first for me. One of the members of my local turning club (Kevin Carpenter of BayLake Woodturners) has gotten into casting pens, and very kindly donated some of his pen blanks. The rest are a mix of walnut, cherry, and maple hardwoods.

Since I started turning pens, I have done 745+ pens for uniformed service personnel and veterans.

Anyone interested in volunteering to support the project can get more info at

Very Nice Looking Pens. What kind of finish did you put on them?

None on the plastic resin … just sand them to 12000 grit and polish with Meguiars (the stuff you buy in the auto department to polish headlight lenses).

On the wooden pens, I sand to 800 grit, seal them with Deft lacquer sealer (mixed 50/50 with lacquer thinner), then use Hut Crystal Coat to get a nice shine. Then I use Ron Brown’s Walnut Oil Microcrystalline Wax.

It is truly a work of art. It must be a fun build. Beautiful pen blanks.

Have your say...
