No Soliciting Sign

The adventures in free-hand routing continue. For a while I had a kind of ugly "No Soliciting" sign I’d made with a white oak veneer over some scraps of mahogany with the milling machine, but it was kind of ugly.

Also, we had some punk say ”... but I’m not soliciting, I’m canvassing!”, so we needed a more comprehensive solution.

Emboldened by my experiences free-hand routering letters for my square dance checkers, I printed up a template, spray adhesived to to a piece of sapele, and went to work. We tested a couple of different colors of paint, to try to match the house trim, a basic black won.

The sapele came from the workshop of a friend of mine who’d just finished restoring a 1929 Stephens wooden cabin cruiser that made the cover of Wooden Boat Magazine this spring, and was moving and cleaning out his shop. It’s nice when there’s a story behind the wood.

I think it came out kinda nice, in the end…

Good one. Great job of free handing!! How can I put one in my phone!! Since I signed up for the Do Not Call list, the calls have increased 4 fold.

Great looking sign!

Unfortunately, it won’t make much difference keeping the solicitors away. I have a sign on my house, and they just keep coming. I had one lady tell me: “Everyone has one of these signs, and I just ignore them.” I had one guy selling siding get mad at me when I told him “thanks for ignoring my sign.” He then went up to my neighbor’s house, which also has a sign, and bitched about me! And this was after my neighbor told him he didn’t appreciate him ignoring his sign!

Anyway, I don’t mean to discourage you, but just wanted to let you know the sign may not slow them down….....!

I’ve actually been shocked at how well its predecessor worked, I suspect that there are rules if not in California then in our town, and that our local law enforcement is looking for reasons to go after the “magazine sales” scam artists who show up occasionally.

Though the new one looks a lot nicer, the major reason we re-did it was to add the “No Canvassing”, because the few people with the “environment” scam organizations: The ones where you look up how their costs are spent and it turns out they just pay administrative overhead. And, really, we only had one or two of the “but I’m not a solicitor, I’m a canvasser, there’s a difference!” schmucks.

It does kind of concern me that “canvasser” also covers local politicians and volunteers for them; I do think involvement in the local political process is an extremely important thing. On the other hand, I’ve learned to meet those folks elsewhere.
