This one is a magnetic key holder. I made it out of spalted maple. The piece was extremely fragile and I had to fill some gaping holes so I used epoxy mixed with some red pearl dust (all the red spots). I then used Wenge for accent inlays. Since the maple was so fragile I didnt want to hang it on the back because I feared screw or nail heads would eventually rip out the back. I made 2 mounting pieces of Wenge with magnets to hold the unit to them. Rare earth magnets were then embedded into the wood. Finished with a single coat of Shellac seal coat and then General finishes high performance water based polyurethane (satin).

are the magnets pretty strong? I thought about one of these for our entry way, but the Mrs. likes to have for things on her key ring than keys

As long as you get rare earth magnets then yes, they are extremely strong. It is holding the other set of keys with 4 keys and a carabiner as well with zero effort.

The rare earth magnets are quite strong. I use them for things. They will also magnetize anything they touch for a length of time. So your key rings will become magnetic :)
