So I just got a lathe and both of my kids (7 and 4) wanted to make something on the lathe. They helped turn two green branches (maple and ash) into lightsabers (we all watched Return of the Jedi last night). They chose to color them with crayons. I’m happy that my lathe works well (Rikon mini-lathe), but I more happy that my kids both had fun turning relatively green branches into toys.

My daughter also had fun playing with the pile of wet shavings on the floor.

Good work with your kids. Show them how cool it is not only to cut on the lathe, but how cool it is to color on the lathe. Hold the crayon up to the spinning wood and watch the magic.

Swirt, great idea about coloring while the spindle is still turning

I can’t claim credit.. It is an idea I got from Doug Stowe

His school kids were using colored pencils, but I tried it with my son (5), using crayons and it worked just as nicely, though not quite as finely pointed. It does teach a gentle hand with the crayon though… if not gentle it can get melty pretty quickly.
