Jewelery Case “Guard fish and the medieval sea monsters”

Linden, beech, fumed oak, oil painting. 21 cm

«Monachus marinus.

This is the closest Google translate can do – Seems to be a work of ancient mythology.

Whatever it represents, it is amazing!!!!

Fish – byba – conductor: Fruit of the author’s imagination.

Marine monk – Monster inhabits the northern seas. Marine monk frightens sailors long ago, but since the early Middle Ages there were the first to describe this monster. This is how, for example, describes an unusual “fish” Conrad Megenberg:

«Monachus marinus. Monk called sea monster in the form of fish, and the top of a man; It has a head like a monk’s tonsure again. On his head scales, and around the head of a black hoop above the ears; hoop consists of hair, like a real monk. The monster has a custom lure people to the beach, making different jumps, and when he sees that people are happy looking at his game, it is still fun to throw in different directions; when the same person can grasp, then drags him into the water and devours. It has a face, it is not similar to humans: fish nose and mouth very close near the nose. “

This is the oldest known description of the German naturalist, who wrote in 1349 the first German natural history «Das pouch der natur», but there is a version that his work is the treatment of more ancient original Latin «Liber de natura rerum» Kantimpratenzisa Thomas (1270).

Triton – Greek god, the messenger of depths, the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite (Romans son of Neptune and Salaca). Father newts.

Sea serpent – the serpent sea. Topitel ships. The creature, which is mentioned in the myths of various cultures and eyewitness accounts.

Calamari – delicious and healthy seafood :)

These are really beautiful. I really enjoy your carving skills… I especially love the feet…
Sea monks were my first and yet still remains my greatest fear of deep water. Awesome!
