I thought you might enjoy seeing these winding sticks I made. Instead of the usual light inlay on dark wood, they rely on the shadow created by the cutout and its carved slope. I needed a pair since my aluminum angle iron I used to use was warped. Hard to get something flat when your reference surface is wonky.

They work great. I made them long enough to fit onto one of my tool chest till supports (pic 5). I stole the idea from a post by Chris Schwarz who stole them from somebody else. Thanks for looking, work safe.

They look great, Kenn.
I’m not sure I understand about the “shadow” idea.

You get a hint of it in pic 3. Between the top of the stick and the hole is beveled. With overhead lighting, this puts the bevel in a shadow and it is dark compared to the hole. It gives you the light/dark contrast needed. You can sight across the top of the sticks from rough adjustments and then use the dark shadow area for precise work. Hope that explains it better. Bottom line is they work great and are quicker to make than the inlay type.

Kenn, nice job on the sticks. I have some mahogany set aside for them, just haven’t quite had the time to make them. BTW you have WAY too much room in that chest, needs more toys er I meant tools! :-)

Just came across your winding sticks and really like them. It’s been nearly two years since you posted the project and I’m curious about your thoughts now. Thinking about making a pair for myself and I’m also wondering how you made the half moons and the bevels?

Have your say...
