Mopani is one of my favorites. However, it is extremely hard, with irregular grain and prone to tearout. It doesn't turn like other hard woods like the ebonies, closer to the rosewoods but with more tear out. So tools have to be sharp and-in my case, at least-scraping before sanding is a must.
