Twin bed headboard and safety rail

When my daughter was nearing the age to move into the “big girl bed” I took it upon myself to talk my wife into letting me handle building a headboard for her. It ended up solving two problems as we didn’t really have a lot to spend on the bed overall and my wife didn’t like ANYTHING at the furniture shops. So, enter me and my leftovers from by gone projects and a few hours later we have a solid and unique headboard….then there was the issue of a safety rail. For those who have never looked for a wooden safety rail just know they aren’t readily available and/or they’re just ugly. I followed the necessary recommendations for children’s furniture with the spacing of the rails themselves and over built the insert that lies beneath the mattress. She is nearly three now and has yet to budge it from under the mattress or otherwise depreciate the structure. Also wanted to add that though the images look as though the headboard and safety rail are one unit they are not.

Nice job Ty. Thanks for posting! I’m building a twin bed frame for my granddaughter and didn’t know how I was going to include a “temporary” guard rail. You provided the answer. Thanks again!!
