Made this for a Toddler, bought the book, American Folk Toys used for 5 bucks, and along with that and the help from ToyMakingDad here. The patterns in the book had to be Enlarged, and Dan provided me with the full size, as I do not have that capability, so Thank You again Dan. It does Spin well, used Spruce for the Discs, Poplar Dowel for center, although I went up in size to 3/8, the suggested size in the book seemed a bit flimsy. The other half found the paint and beads on sale and used parachute nylon cord for string. Left the knots exposed on top, in the event the string needs replacing, was a fun project, noe on to another.
