Here is a Derby Style Walking Cane I made for a good friend’s brother who was turning 70. My friend wanted something special so we discussed some ways to personalize it . He went on to tell me a story that when they were kids he would raid his brother’s coin collection to go and buy candy and thought we could incorporate a collectible coin into the design. I found a beautiful Mercury Dime which was minted the same year his brother was born to celebrate his love of coins and the milestone birthday. The handle is Black Walnut and mounted on a a Birdseye Maple shank with a Blackwood and Lacewood spacer. I finished it off with several coats of Danish Oil and Gunstock Finish.

Hi Rafe, I just went through your collection of projects, and you produce really nice items. I like the coin aspect of this cane, especially with the connection to his year of birth. I also use coins on the underside of some of my projects in order to date them, but now I’ll also keep the birthday connection in mind. Thanks for the idea.
