My daughter (15) is a BIG fan of the Minecraft icons, stampylongnose (Stampy Cat) and Squid (iBallisticSquid) from YouTube. She wanted to do an art project at home of the faces of the character’s ‘skins’ out of wood, so she asked for my help.
I cut a bunch of 1 inch squares from a 3/4 inch board (about 140 of them. Each ‘head needs 64.) My daughter painted them by hand and glued them together into the required arrangement. Even so they were a little bit delicate. She wanted them to hang on her wall, so I offered to frame them to help keep them together and dress them up a bit.
I cut some wood that I had laying in my scrap bin and used my miter sled to miter the corners. Because the character faces are not exactly square it took some tweaking. I actually undercut the edges with my router so that they would overhang the frame a little bit. I added a 1/4 inch plywood back for strength. This is good as I need practice making frames.
There’s at least one more of these on the horizon, probably more. My daughter actually made a video of the painting and gluing of Stampy. It’s sped up and set to music. You can watch it here if you like. (YouTube link)
EDIT: Here’s a video of the painting and gluing of Squid too. (Video Link)

Daddy, Would You Help Me…
There is No way you can say No to that request. Fun working with Kids in the Shop.
