I always wanted to build a large Rimu dresser( Rimu is a New Zealand native, varies from dark heart wood to lighter cream for the Sap wood). This stands 1570mm high and is 710mm overall deep. All of the timber is recycled from old furniture, wall framing and whatever. I was going to use this as my dresser in our bedroom but it won’t go up the stairs so my wife has used it to store a lot of antique linen and what have you. Took about a year as I left it for about 5 months as I had other stuff to do but went back and finished it as it was taking up too much space in the workshop. I just love it.

This is a fine piece of furniture. I haven’t seen much made of rimu… how does it work? Any similarities to the “ancient” kauri fron NZ?

Kauri is a dream to work with hand tools. Rimu can be a bit more difficult as the grain can vary but it is my preferred timber for furniture as it has a beautiful grain.

Had to laugh, sorry, Sounds like building a boat in the basement. My wife would of made me cut it in half to fit up the stairs, and would of never let me forget it. Nice job. Could we have a few closeups of the Rimu? Sounds interesting. Thanks for posting. Don

Beautiful craftsmanship, and the wood is fantastic.
