I recently decided to try my hand at a full sized chess board for a friend. I decided to try some new tools and stuff and I’m pretty pleased with the result. The woods for the playing surface and corners are sugar maple and something that might be rosewood. The border is ash, walnut and red oak on the outside. I sealed the board with Shellac and then put a topcoat of EnviroTex Lite. The bottom has some felt feet which are not pictured. I feel like I could do a lot better if I tried to make a board again, and I expect that eventually I will try. But for a first try at something like this, I’m basically satisfied with the result. But any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks for looking!

Thats gorgeous!! Just make sure the chess pieces have felt so they don’t mar that beautiful finish!. (I’m sure its resilient enough, jus sayin’)

I Love a good chess board project! made my first and last so far in december. You did a much better job on the finish than I could!
I personally prefer the dark sides better (A light strip around the playing field wide dark edges around that to finish the board). In my mind it makes the board pop more, but it is up to personal preference.

Cool, thanks a lot guys! I’ll certainly take that advice about felt on the pieces. I am definitely interested in trying some different techniques and styles of chess boards so I’ll probably give the dark edge idea a shot here at some point too. Thanks again!

Looks great! I would be happy with a result like this if it were my first or last.

I know how much work went into it and the outcome is truly amazing.
