I promised my mom that I would make her a jewelry cabinet for Mother’s Day. That was 2012. Planning phase had begun. I finally got around to purchasing some materials for it this January and finished it in time for Father’s Day 2014. She absolutely loves it though so I think she’s okay with it taking so long.
Three kinds of wood in the project – Maple box and mirror frame (matches their furniture), Poplar drawer and hangers (cheap and easy to work with), Oak veneer back (left over from another project).
Total cost was a little over $100.
Finished with B.L.O.
Things I learned:
-Do not try to build a box with mitred corners without providing some additional bracing. When clamping the glued joints, they will want to separate. Learn how to cut a box joint. It is easier to glue up and much stronger. I ended up doweling the joints on this as I didn’t trust the mitres to hold up.

I like it. Use of a rare earth magnet to keep door closed is a nice touch.
