This was my first arts and crafts project. We sold our living room furniture so I am charged with building it all. I bought a lot of rough sawn poplar to learn on. I used the plans from Robert Lang’s book. The reviews are mixed on the book but the drawings give you 95% of what you need. If you can’t close the loop on the 5%, well then you probably need to buy those $20 plans from woodcraft. This project was a lot fun and challenging. All the joinery required some real precision. I tried to finish it with ebony… Man… Poplar is hard to finish… I probably conditioned/applied/sanded 6 times. I finally just applied a few coats of wipe on poly and buffed some wax onto it. Total construction time – 5 hours. Total finish application time – 6 hours (over a couple weeks). I definitely need to reduce my time spent finishing.

Also threw together a circle cutting jig for my bandsaw – super easy and simple.

Well despite the finishing adventure, it turned out great!
