Banksia Pod Vase

Lessons Learned:

This is my first attempt turning a Banksia pod. I found the seeds have multiple layers. There’s an outer soft layer, a second layer of what I’ll call fuzz, then a final layer of hard seed. Turning the Banksia pod was certainly a mess making endeavor. The outer soft layer flys all over as it’s being turned off, then you hit the fuzz layer. The fuzz layer is a huge mess. If you look at the bottom of this vase, you can still see some of fuzz. The inner hard layer is easy to turn, but doesn’t finish too well.

The Banksia pod I bought at my local store was kind of small as an experiment. After squaring an end and turning it between centers, I found I was not going to have a lot to work with and still make room for the vase insert. Due to the short length, I ended up leaving the end that I clamped in the chuck as the base.

Next time, if there is a next time, I’ll get a bigger seed.

Good work with the Banksia pod. You never know how they will turn up. Looks good.
