Matching Mantle Boxes

Well I’m almost out of wood, so I had to make something with leftover scraps laying around the shop.

The sides of these boxes are Sapele, but I didn’t have thick enough pieces to match the grain on all four sides. But the grain in Sapele is such that the “unmatched” grain isn’t very noticeable. I really like working with this wood.

Some of the Peruvian walnut has some small knots in it, but that just adds character.

And the Wenge on the top – well I love it! The Wenge looks much better in person.

Well I wasn’t anticipating it, but these ended up being some of my favorite boxes I’ve made so far.

Finished with 3 coats of Watco natural, two coats of shellac for a sanding sealer, and three coats of spray lacquer.

One accident though. When routing out the hinge mortise I accidently measured to the inside of the router blade instead of the outside. Arghhhhhh! Oh well, live and learn.

Thanks for looking, and any comments and suggestions are appreciated!

Very nice work. Love the wood.
