no previous part Part 1 of LJ anniversary series no next part

well today is my first year on lumberjocks , and i must say THANK YOU to you all ,for all the inspiration and help i have received here .
i recently recieved a PM from my buddy ’ LUMBERDUSTJOHN ’ ,asking me , who or what is lincoln morinaga ?
on my homepage .
he was my master ( teacher ) in prison .that taught me carpentry and woodworking .that was 45 years ago !
because of the laws about that , i was not able to correspond with him , but did manage to get some help after my first job , from a FBI agent in Washington D.C. , to send some pictures back to the prison to mr morinaga . they had to be screened in their bomb detecting equipment first . later i hired a guy to help finish some work , and he asked me if i had been in a course in prison , i said yes , and he said that he was there in the same class when the pictures arrived . and that mr morinaga was showing them to anyone that he could find to look at them ( including the warden ) , even told the students , ” you can do this too , just pay attention and learn ” ! . i tried for years to find mr morinaga , and even looked for him in the net , when i first got my computer , no luck . well last week , john , found him for me ! THANK YOU , JOHN !
He is 88 years old , and hard of hearing , and a little muddled about the past .( who isn’t ) ?
his wife relayed some of my story to him , and i asked to maybe come and thank him in person this summer ,
and in true lumberjock form , he said , ” come on by any time , i’ll give you any tips on woodworking you want ”!
he doesn’t have a computer , and never heard of lumberjocks that i know of .
for me this is like finding the father i barely knew .
i plan on sending some picture of my work , and making him a box to say thank you , that i will take in person .
my year her at LJ , has had it’s up’s and downs , i have made many friends here , and have almost 200 buddy’s .
the things i have learned here are priceless , and have brought me many hours of joy ( yes , it is addictive ) !
i was ’ virtualy ’ wined and dinned here twice , once for 3 months in many PM’s about going to asia and teaching and running a wood shop and getting RICH ! WHAT A FLOP ! that was the box that got away .
The other was recent , more PM’s and lots of phone calls , from a central american country , about teaching about the use of the bandsaw in a furniture factory . MORE BULL , BIG NADA ! it seems all these offers fell through because i wanted them to send me a round trip air fare to show faith on their part !
As things stand , i have you all , my family to share and learn with , THANK YOU ! i love you all ( well almost ,i can do without the control freaks (LOL) !
i had always thought i would just move through life quietly , as all the work i have done has been pirated by anyone that could take the credit for it , somehow my name never showed up on it anywhere .
when i came here to LJ’s , i decided that i would give my knowledge and work tips away , thereby saving anyone the trouble and guilt of stealing it . i have taught many people over the years , but until i came here , have wondered if it really meant anything in the real world , as i don’t hear from them .
Through you all , i know it does . and for the first time , i have provenance in my work . and sharing is the best , knowing that we all prosper through it .
while i have waited for the clock to strike 365 , i have re-read some of the comment you have all left on my posts ,
and am a little teary from the love you have all shared with me , and even though i live alone , my heart is filled
to the brim with happiness at having found you , and being a part of this wonderful family !

So to all , have a great Easter weekend , and lets come back relieved , relaxed , refreshed , rebuilt , or reborn !

Happy Anniversary David. I think you have been one of the most generous contributors I’ve seen since coming to Lumberjocks, and I look forward to your posts. It is people like you who make this place what it is. Keep on keepin’ on!

Happy Anniversary, David !!!

I see you as a modest and humble man.

I hope you’ll be willing and able enough … to “toot your own horn” ... so that Mr. Morinaga KNOWS what he helped give to the woodworking world.

I’m happy to call you friend, and to have been blessed by your generosity, your talent, your experience, and—more than that—your willingness to give of yourself, selflessly, on the LumberJocks site :-)

I had an old, dear friend, in Southern California—Ruth Calderon.

Ruth once told me that she “could never totally trust anybody who hadn’t spent at least a little time in jail.” LOL !!! I always knew what she meant, and the kind of people that she was talking about.

Cheers !!

Happy First Year!!!........So glad you found your mentor Mr Morinaga especially after 45 years…....a visit and the box will be a really nice gesture for your teacher of many years ago…..I think he will be amazed at how well you have utilized his teachings to become the skilled woodworker your are now.

Keep the projects, blogs, teachings and words of wit coming….......I definitely enjoy them as I’m sure all the Lunberjocks do!!! Many thanks for introducing me to LJs and all your tutoring sessions….without LJs…....I’d get more sleep and…..have a lot more money!!!!

Happy Anniversary!!!

Thinking back on the projects, forum discussions and blogs you have posted on this site, the one that sticks in the front of my mind is when you felt the need to leave this community.

I know I speak for many when I say THANK YOU for swallowing the hurt and staying here.

Happy Anniversary, and many more

Happy Anniversary, David!

But I can’t believe you have been here only one year. Seems like you’ve been here much longer.
Well, anyway, thank you so much from me to you being here, giving us so much.

well, you are really known now around the world. I hope everybody is making the effort to give credit where credit is due. I can understand you – I worked 35 years in computers and my name is on nothing… I don’t mind it too much.

If you even happen to come this way, make sure you hop over. You won’t get reach, but you will get a non virtual dinner :-)

Hi David, Though I have only been on LB’s a short time you have become one of favorites. From what I see you are kind to those who will let you and teach us all. You seem to be a humble man and realize on this site there are many who are just learning and don’t have the skills of some and you welcome them anyway. Happy 1st anniversary.
