If you been following my (actually very good) ShopNotes blog on my website, you'll know that I'm a big fan of the website custommade.com. I've got many jobs from there - good jobs. I highly recommend them to the guy trying to become professional.

About a month ago, a customer didn't put a job up for bids by makers, as is the usual case there; instead, he just selected me, and said, "Can you make this for me?" Turns out, he wanted rather large mission style computer desk to be used for his motion picture FX business in Manhattan. He wanted a real "showpiece", could I come up with something? He gave me a good idea of what he was thinking, design-wise, so that was helpful.

So, I came up with this initial concept:

Table Wood Rectangle Wood stain Flooring

As you can see, quite a "showpiece"!

Well, seems what he meant by the term "showpiece" was that it would be very well done, technically - that is, tight joints, great finish, so on. He thought this was a great design, but not quite right for this venue.

Well, long story short, we came up with this design, that he agreed to:

Furniture Light Product Rectangle Wood

Still, a very nice concept and design.

I will be delivering this myself (Manhattan is about 6 hours away), as what a pain it is to ship something like this, not to mention worrying about damage. I wanted to meet the guy anyway, and likely procure more business!

I am making this modular - the top will be removable, as will the two sides and front. The front large panel will connect the two sides by threaded rod - borrowing from bed construction methods:

Wood Parallel Font Door Hardwood

This way, I'll be able to get this thing up the elevator to his floor and be able to be light enough to be moved by two guys.

Wish me luck!

Love the looks of the Glasgow style inlay, too bad he didn't choose that one. At any rate they both look great.
Looks like an ambitious project, and I am sure you will nail it.

Hopefully, you will post pix here as you progress. It is a fantastic looking project. What are you planning for the finish?

Just a simple poly of some sheen to be determined; he likes the blond oak…so the finish should be a breeze!

Have you done any inlays like that? Looking for some tips.

Sides and Front Panel

The sides, as shown are done; The front panel is not; having a hard time finding the right ray flecked QSWO to resaw, as I cannot get good veneer…ugh. It's a bear to re-saw QSWO, although the book matching look is wonderful.

Also note that I am using an assembly technique taken from wood bed frames - see previous post.
