Hey Oldrivers,

I’d like to assist but I don’t have a laser branding unit. I do have a personalized branding iron, electric, and for as much as I use it, it works fine. Was a retirement gift from my son.
If interested, it can be viewed at: https://www.brandnew.net/product-category/custom-branding-irons/handcrafted-by-series/

Anyway, good luck,
Tom

Thank you very much Oldtool Actually I have a Branding tool but I have a list of wood work Serving trays, Lazy Susan’s cutting boards Etc. where some people buy them as gifts and want me to personalize them for their friends or for their clients. Some are Realtors who present them to a Clint at closing time as a new house warming gift.

You may want to check with Steve Good. I know he has had a couple of them and found one that works well for him.

I had two of the cheap Chinese laser engravers and it wasn’t horrible. Traded one to Mos, and the other I stripped the gears on it by using it too much. They’re a little north of $100. Pretty neat, but they’ve got a limited table, and aren’t very speedy. I bought a branding iron that I don’t use much, and I’ve tried kolrosing to sign projects. Most of the time now, I just write on the bottom with a pencil and then shellac over it, and call it good.

Depends on what you want to do. For $250 I’d suggest the Neje Laser Master. Nancy McIntyre runs this group and is the US distributor. They are also on Aliexpress and Amazon. Lots of forum topics here on lj. Remember that laser engraving is more like etching because you’re burning the wood. Then you move up to CO2 lasers and more money.

If you’re engraving flat objects then a small inexpensive CNC might be a better choice.

I have been looking too. Expensive Laser go with the Epilog $6,000 + which my wife uses at or Library for free & she loves it. One I have seen advertised is the Glowforge $4000.. To have one here at home I think we are going to buy the Atomstack A5 Pro 40 watt. Seems to have great reviews on YouTube. You can buy it on Amazon for $420 with free shipping or Bangood $329 plus shipping. They also make in a 10, 20, 30 watt version. You have to buy a program called Laserburn or Laserdribble to run it around $40. Lots of advise on how to use and set it up on Youtube and a great review on by a sight called “Hooked on Wood” also on Youtube.
Be sure to do your homework before buying. I always enjoy your treasures…Joe

Have the Atomstack A5 Pro 40W.

Has some limitations compared to a true C0^2 cutting laser.

Can inscribe / mark / etch most of the things needed. Would recommend.

There seems to a new set of solid state, fixed focus lasers that seem to be worth having. The power is somewhat mis-leading as the true laser power is much lower than the 40W. The “wattage” increases being reported are a result of the focus point becoming smaller. This seems to be a marketing ploy as the power is “referenced” to something with a much wider focus spot (or lower energy density per unit area).

If you are looking into systems, the FIXED Focus optics of the solid sate laser is a positive.

Then get Laserburn software and you should be good to go. Not too difficult to add auto zero and optical registration with some wiring, limit switches, a housing, and an IP camera.
