« Part 2: Rebuild the Shopsmith cabinet ...again..doing better. Part 3 of shop projects that failed series no next part

At age 68, I have been my own craft business, bought many books and magazines. Gone to classes and workshops on making projects and been able to get ideas and patterns. But last year considering a new step and the internet I PAID into membership to The Woodworkers Guild of America for plans and tips and advice. In my opinion I would tell others spend your money elsewhere. I have received in emails only about 4 free tips on projects or hints. George is a great explainer, I used to have DVD sets when they sold those and should have been more alert that this was a come on. Sure enough daily I get 3 or more, BUY BUY BUY Upgrade to Gold.. I can get many free plans on utube sights. Magazines at $10 for a year….7 issues with plans and articles. One of the BEST is Woodsmith with not ADS only plans and well done articles, buy one and check it out. I have made many projects from their plans. As a business I had 5 magazine subscriptions to feed my knowledge, well worth the low cost and drop any if the cost was going up or another offer came up for low dollars for a year offer. I can guess you know I will not be renewing my $7 fee to them for next year. I am very tired of ads every %^&% day to sell sell buy this set and this promo. I would rather go to Harbor Freight or any discount store and be happy with a low cost buy of something. If you want to get free plans check on utube for some true woodworking channels for those and be rewarded with plans and a video to help you, not another come on by a business. Even this WWGOA will refer you to the link for free plans of a come on Book company to buy into. I could not believe it…. This has been my experience and i cannot wait to end my time. If yours has been different then my congrats to you. Best wishes.
Learn every day. Be Safe.

TRue to form. the next day 4 ads. 3 to spend money on something and one they go live. but you have to sign in again like a beginner. what a poor design for paying members to receive a link then, not have the secret code. There is the book ad for free plans by…I won’t mention the name…of 150 plans join his club. what a rip….

Well I have heard of this business practice and been warned off joining.

Its a sad day the organisations consider the practice as part of their business plan but alas they do
Only 150 plans?

Possibly in the same league as everybody’s woodworking Buddy Ted!

We don’t need them whilst LJs is alive as its all here or members who can point you in the right direction FOC!

72 here ;-] Back in the day all we had were mags or books and bought my share, but today there’s ways to get our fix of how2’s and plans to be buying into these money grabbing ways.
After coming on this site and learning how to make scratch built models I’ve come to have a higher appreciation for the time and effort it takes to make plans and set up a site and have no problem giving them their do$ but like you’ve said hounding people by email is not the way to make friends and loyal costumers.
Just my $.02

I experienced the same thing. While I like George’s videos and I don’t consider him in the same class as copyright infringer Ted, the value of a membership isn’t there. I think my membership at the Finewoodworking site is far more worthwhile.

Have your say...
