WOODCRAFT REFUSED TO SERVE ME!

On June 1, 2020 I went to my local Woodcraft store in Dayton, Ohio.

Sky Cloud Door House Gas

I went there intending to get some new diamond sharpening stones. But, when I got there I was told that I had to put on a mask if I was going to be in the store. I told them I wasn't going to do that. They informed me that they were not going to serve me. I said "This is a free country!" One of the employees took off his mask and said "It's not about freedom, it's that we have some elderly employees here and we want to keep them safe". FYI, I was the only customer in the store. Everyone else was an employee. They were all wearing masks. WTF?

I don't typically rant about things, but this is just getting stupid! I visited this same store last year, sometime in the fall, I think - I don't really remember. So let me ask, if the flu season is typically from October to April, why weren't they wearing masks then? When I was there last, every employee they had working that day was over 55. They didn't tell me to put on a mask because it was flu season! WTF is wrong with these people.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for being cautious and safe. I'm all for staying home of you are sick and could potentially cause someone else to get sick. However, If I'm not sick, and you're not sick, if you decide to wear a mask, and I decide NOT to wear a mask, don't think for a minute that you can tell me that I HAVE to wear a mask before I can shop in your store. You DO NOT get to choose for me what I will and won't do.

As soon as I left the store I posted a video of the incident. You can watch if you want. If you do watch it and you agree leave a comment and share the video with as many people as you know. We don't have to put up with this kind of treatment from anyone. Especially in a "free" country.

Woodcraft has lost me as a customer for life. They have also lost thousands of dollars that I would spend as well as thousands of dollars that others would have spent as a result of this one event. I plan on telling every woodworker I know about this. Maybe you will think twice about supporting a company where the moto is "THE CUSTOMER IS NEVER RIGHT!"

I wear one to stores as respect to others. I could care less about myself, but I don't want to be responsible for the health of anyone else. Older people can't afford to get this. Whether you are a believer of the virus or not, it doesn't hurt to just go along. It doesn't impose much on you to wear one for 10 minutes.

But each there own.

I watched your video, you looked like an idiot to me.
but that's just my opinion. You don't have to like it or me!

It's a free country (sort of), but it's their store, and they're free to make the rules.

But, I too, would be put off by their behavior. But isn't it better to be gracious about it and just leave?

My family was at a restaurant yesterday. We asked for a table for 9. The hostess said that the state would only allow them to seat 6 at a table. So, we took two tables and moved back and forth as we liked. I told her that 7 of us live in the same house and eat at the same table at home. She said something to the effect that it's not her choice, but what the governor has ordered. I replied that the gov is an idiot. (yeah probably shouldn't have shared that opinion on a Sunday).

They didn't make us wear masks. It's a restaurant! I mean, you need access to your mouth in a restaurant! We even visited with a friend we saw eating there at another table (not wearing a mask either). ;-)

Keep in mind that people do stupid things when they are afraid.

There are only a handful of corporate Woodcraft stores. Odds are that location is privately owned. So, screaming about Woodcraft is meaningless. Did you talk to the owner or manager? Are they under any sort of regulations by the state on how to conduct business right now? Regardless, the owner has the right to set their own policies. You can't go in there barefoot, shirtless, etc.

I can assure you that wearing masks is not a corporate policy. Our local store has been wide open during this entire situation. No masks required for customers or employees. Some choose to wear them, but not all. There has also been no silly tape on the floor to mark distances or one-way aisles or any of that foolishness I see in some stores.

Given the tone of your video I can imagine how you behaved in the store. Frankly, I doubt if they want you back anyway. I wouldn't shop where masks are required just based on principle. But I wouldn't raise hell about it either. Your actions served no purpose.

You mentioned freedom & choice… I figure that also relates to the business owner.
Based on their decision you decided not to do business with them. Sounds like you both had freedom of choice.

Good for them. I wish more stores did this. I wear a mask always inside public buildings.

https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/static/publicorders/revised-business-guidance-sd.pdf

See Sec. 7

It may be a free country, but it isn't necessarily a free state. Every single employee in every single store I have been to has been wearing a mask. If they aren't there is a good reason for it, such as pleurisy, asthma where wearing a mask would put them at greater risk etc.

I remember when I was in second grade the big argument for everything was "It's a free country!" The next time you are in the security line at the airport, feel free to yell "What a waste of time - I always put my bombs in my check-in luggage. They don't fit in the overhead compartments."

You have the freedom of being an idiot and a free one!
Your video is simply pathetic!

Good for the store to protect the staff and customers from the virus.

Sometimes it's better to leave sleeping dogs lie, however, you need a stick up your arse to get out their shop QUICKLY.
If I was your neighbour, with your attitude, I'd drum you out of my state!

I also live in the Dayton Area and go to that store all the time. Ever since Governor Dewine permitted retail stores to open you have known the requirements he laid out and that stores had the right to demand you wear a mask. I also believe much of the concerns surrounding this pandemic are overblown; BUT As much as I hate wearing the thing, I want to see all of the employees working as long as they can so I will do what I must when I am in his store. Good riddance to you then if you are going to throw that attitude to that store and their concern for their employees.

It's their store, they make the rules.

Your lack of care and compassion for the health of others is astounding.

I'm pretty sick to death of people whining about wearing a friggin facemask. Whether or not you have the sense to understand that masks are for the benefit of all, surely you have the modicum of cognitive ability to understand that Woodcraft has the right to refuse service to anyone they wish.

If/when I'm ever through Dayton again, I will make it a point to stop and spend money at that store.

Some people leave interesting footprints with name and location. This guy has his name on his video. I did a quick Google search and found information on him. The info also had a picture of him that matched the video. I do not want to know him.
