Well DIY if you have access to a metal lathe anyway.

I’m working on a small stool, that I want to assemble with hidden dowels, this off course calls for some dowel markers and therefore is an excuse to go tool shopping.

However my local supplier had sold out the size I needed and it kept being out of stock when I checked by, so I decided it was a good time to make my own. I used a metal lathe before but it was about 25 years ago, So I had a friend run me through the basics and after a couple of sessions I now had two dowel markers

And tonight I took them to the shop and tried them out – they worked great. Next step is to make some more and perhaps some for 6mm dowels – as these are 8 mm. And perhaps get some brass rod to make them from.

in place ready to mark

Getting holes for 8 dowels lined up without these markers would have been crazy difficult – at least for me :)

Ahhh now I can see in picture what you were talking about.
Cool self made tools are the best.

Yes it feels great to make your own tools – I also got around to make a pair of 6 mm :)

Have your say...
