As a home owner I’ve struggled for years with projects because I don’t have a solid work surface. When I started wood carving recently this became painfully obvious. So now I’ve decided to invest in a proper workbench. After looking at 100s of benches online and in books I think I know what I want: Size: 6’ long, 24” deep. This will fit my workspace well. Part 2: Purchased my base material tonight (and my table saw is better than I hoped)

Well, tonight I went to the big orange store and picked up the lumber for my bench base: (8) 2×10x10’ “premium” construction lumber. It took a while picking through the pile to find something approaching reasonable. My plan is to rip them and plane them tomorrow on my new Steel City planer (not the spiral blade version). Part 4: uh oh... I let the smoke out of my table saw...

Well… this might slow the project down a bit… My table saw is now parked in my driveway just in case it re-ignites during the night. It was a cheap craftsman, but it s the only table saw I’ve got. Smoke was pouring out from under it filling the garage with noxious fumes. So… what to do now? I wasn’t really ready to go invest, but maybe now is the time…. can I get something worthwhile for $500?
