Houses are small in Japan as you’d imagine. I never thought I’d be able to have a workshop. But we recently moved to a house in Tokyo that had an extra bath/toilet I have been able to slowly convert to a shop.

you heard that correctly —my shop is in a toilet—

I have built a bench that just fits in beside the bath tub (I had to pull the toilet out…. although leaving it would have been the ultimate in workshop convenience….). Space is limited but I’m excited to have a space. Big north American power tools are out of the question in a small space. But many seem to think Japanese hand tools are cool and for me they are what I can get at the local HW store just down the street, so I think I’ll be fine.

I have three small kids, and I hope this workshop will give them a place to learn about woodworking (which is practically unheard of in Tokyo) plus a chance for me to have a bit of fun!!

Sept 2016 update: Finished a simple drill press table and fence!

Feb 2017 update: Screw this!!! sticking one foot in a bathtub to saw a board is no fun. Dim lights… using the shower as a timber storage!!! no more!!!! Full renovation!!! walls out, floor out, complete re-do.. Stay tuned..

Nov 2017 update: nearly done… might even have the lathe operational by X-mas… just a few more weeks and it will be a real shop….

Jan 2018 update: its not a toilet anymore!!! its a fantastic (but small) workshop built for purpose space now.
