The recent happenings in the forums made me think seriously about the future of LumberJocks. This website has been built on the foundation of woodworking projects and knowledge sharing instead of general chat site for those that just want to buddy around. I came to a conclusion that these two principal differences cannot coexist under one roof.

I had to make this tough decision as soon as possible before it is too late. And I decided to go back to the roots of what made LumberJocks so special, and that is focus on woodworking. There are enough (well I’d say too many already) social websites to hang around in.

Instead I want LumberJocks to be the best online resource for novice as well as expert woodworkers through the unique woodworking projects showcase accompanied by great woodworking tutorials and constructive woodworking questions&answers in the forums.

There are two outcomes of this decision. First, off-topic Coffee Lounge forum is no longer open for new posts and second, the posting rules has been updated as follows:

  • Postings are to be woodworking related and family updates only.
  • Postings are to be supportive and beneficial to the site as a whole, to the woodworking craft, to our LJ community, and to our members.
  • Keep your posts appropriate for our members of all ages to read/see.
  • Be civil, courteous and respectful to all.
  • Don’t get personal. A good general rule to follow is, “criticize ideas, not people”.
  • Debates with other member(s) that are not beneficial to the site as a whole are to be done through the private message system.
  • We do not tolerate abusive, malicious, personal attacks.
  • Postings deemed to be Spam will be removed.
  • Don’t advertise your business or the business you are affiliated with. If you have a product or service that you would like to advertise contact our advertising department. Note that labeling projects as “for sale” as well as adding your business website to your profile and signature is allowed. Premium business features will be added in the future.
  • You are responsible for following the copyright rules. Don’t post photos/content by others without consent/credit given.

I believe this change will make our LumberJocks woodworking website better in the long run…

This may ruffle a few feathers but in the long run I think it will benefit the community.

Thanks Martin, although it is not the perfect solution, maybe we can all work together and move forward.
I appreciate EVERYONE on this site for their skills, willingness to help others and willingness to do the right thing when asked.

I don’t think this will hurt LJs one bit, Martin.

I think this site is getting too large for, The Coffee Lounge.

It makes it too hard for you to manage .

Like you said, ”There are enough (well I’d say too many already) social websites to hang around in”.

Martin, I think you’ve made a tough but wise decision. This is your business and you have the right to run it how you envisioned it. I agree with Jim, it will make it a more friendly place and therefore more conducive to learning and sharing. Thank you for taking a stance.

Martin, I understand the reasons for why you had to make the decision you did. Unfortunately for me, I often went into just that specific area of LJ’s and enjoyed it for the most part, Somtimes there was questionable remarks made in that forum but I also see that in other forums on LJ’s.
My hope is that LJ’s stays to its roots and becomes a better site day by day.
I dont like it that there will no longer be a coffee lounge forum for off the wall topics for those of us that want to converse about things other than wood working but all have the same intrests.
I thought it was a good idea to have a place on LJ’s like the coffee lounge so as to not send people to other forum sites and away from LJ’s.
I will and shall continue to be a LJ…..This is one of my favorite sites on the web and has been for almost 3 years now.

Thanks for making a difficult decision, Martin.

I hope this move will unite the site again back to your vision of a respectful, friendly, helpful, sharing community of woodworkers!

Thanks, Martin. I know it was a hard and possibly unpopular decision, but YEAH!

So the “Blockers” have won another one…..complain enough and you get the block feature…..complain a little more and you get a whole forum closed down. oh well

Martin, I can see your side of things, and I’m sure as the administrator you have to make some tough decisions. However, whether it was meant to be or not, this is a “social network” site as much as it is a tool for learning/teaching/showcasing woodworking. The Coffee Lounge was a place for fellow woodworkers to get to know each other, have fun, share stories, etc, etc. There are 20K+ woodworkers now on the site, of course every now and then you’ll get some inappropriate forum topics, etc – thats just how the internet is…theres no escape from it. Its sad that everyone has to suffer because of a few bad apples, or because a few people complain (if you dont like the content in “coffee lounge”.....dont go there. Its that simple). I’m afraid Lumberjocks just went down a few points in my book. I guess you can’t please everyone.

That being said….overall Lumberjocks is awesome, and i LOVE the site. I think you do a great job, and this site has really grown into something amazing that a lot of people benefit from (including myself). I have yet to see a site (on woodworking) that is as easy and user friendly than this site. Thanks for your dedication to the community!

Great Martin,
whatever it takes to keep this wonderful community together.
It has been a wonderful experience for myself as a new member.
Many Thanks to you and all those who make this such a wonderful place.

Martin, there are a few threads in the coffee lounge that are probably appropriate for other forums -”Suggestions for simple joinery”, for example. Do you think you could go back a page or two and move some of the worthy ones?

Wow I always thought of this site as a big world wide shop, and the coffee lounge was the water cooler. What does a shop do without a place to blow off so steam?
