Does anyone want to carve an Alien Chess Set?

Hello,

I think ongoing projects or ideas can go here, so…

I am a fan of Alien and Aliens (the movies, not the gray or green aliens), and went through a phase in my life when I was sculpting. Started something but never finished it so I just tossed that idea.

However, going through the pictures of my projects for this site, I stumbled onto the pictures of that work in progress.

I am not great at carving (hoping to pick this up in the future), so maybe someone wants to give this a shot.

A little backstory. I was actually friends with a company that did eventually make a chess set. They didn’t really do it the way I had envisioned, so this was still an “undone” project idea.

Simply put, a fully carved center column on which a fully carved chess table with two drawers sits. Imagine the edges of the table represented as part of landscape, pipes and debris on the “checker” surface.

The checker surface is produced by using alternating Grated and Flat tiles. Grated are the “black”, flat are the “white”.

All figures are Alien movie inspired (if not an Alien fan, you may not get the idea for figures).

Pawn – Egg
Rook – Facehugger in the Stasis Tube (from Aliens)
Knight – Alien 3 alien standing in a position whose silhouette will resemble a standard Knight figure (horse’s head)
Bishop – (I know, too easy, and humanoid) an Alien alien standing straight up, face down (back of head sticking up), arms crossed on chest, silhouette resembles a standard bishiop figure.
Queen – yup. that was easy. Sitting down, elbows on knees, head down so the “crown” is up.
King -.... wait for it… Space Jockey. Gotta have that guy. I know he is dead, but how much does the King actually move?

And now for where I started… I thought about designing the column by producing one corner and then replicating it (molding and casting).

Here are the pictures of that. This should give you a general idea of where I was going and hopefully inspire you…

Hey mosin,

I’m totally blown away by your sculptures/carvings. I’m a HUGE Alien(s) fan and have done a lot of prop making over the years (including a fully wearable Iron Man foam costume). I would be very interested in helping sculpt/cast pieces to get this to market. Let me know if there’s anything I can help you with. I actually sculpted a chest-burster for a special effects company in TX a few years ago and have lots of casting experience. Best of luck. I think you’re onto something. Private Message me if you’d like some help.

Chris

Hi Chris,

I have actually completely abandoned that idea and kind of sculpting in general, so it is up for grabs. That is why I shared it here.

If interested you should do it. I am just throwing it out there for someone to grab since I will not be moving forward on it.

Plus I think it would be really cool to see it carved out of wood. Obviously much harder, but it would certainly be one of a kind.

Igor.

Have your say...
