Part 1: Preparation and opening day

Obviously I have been posting numerous things getting ready for this. Although I have lived my entire life around the rally, I have never attempted to have a booth at the rally. An opportunity came up this year to do a booth at the Buffalo Chip Campground. For those who are familiar with the rally, the Buffalo Chip is the largest single venue at the rally. It’s estimated that 60% of the people who come pass through there at some point during the event. The number of peopleeexpected this...

Part 2: Day #2

08-02-2014 04:20 PM by Monte Pittman | 16 comments »

Day 1 was lethargic for everyone. An estimated 100,000 bikers rolled in yesterday, but nobody was spending any money. Weather is nearly perfect for the event. It’s supposed to stay in the mid 80s with minimal chance of rain. Booth looks a little better this morning Although the Buffalo Chip Campground is designed to be a very Comercial venture, I want also give them credit for honoring vetrans, Other things sponsors bring, yes Budwiser is a sponsor Gates are ...

Part 3: End of day #3

It was a better day, better crowd. Sales picked up some. Lots of talkers that they would be back later in the week. The morning started slow again, but I was prepared today. I cut pieces at home to work on when I had time. Of course the bench I posted earlier today I also started another set of stools Besides the music and wild looking bikers, there were other events going on. There was Roller Derby today, There was Tractor races And of course a bike show ...

As written by Snoopy, “It was a dark and stormy night”. Ok, I was having my best day of the rally and mother nature shut me down early with rain. What’s a little lightning to a few hundred thousand bikers. Day ended with this Leading to this Yes 1-1/2 hours to get across a 3 mile town. Day 4 was slightly better, but still not great. Day 5 was starting off with a bang, but cut short. At least I am seeing hope. Not quite at the break even point. Thought it wo...

Part 5: Start of day 7

So far the rally has not been particularly good for me. It’s still possible to be good, but today and tomorrow would have to be pretty darn good. The other thing is “possible” sales. Anyone who has sold retail has heard the lines of “We’ll be back” or “We will call you in the next couple weeks”. After some time, you know which ones you will never hear from (vast majority). But there’s always a couple true “possible” call backs....

Part 6: Wrap up

08-09-2014 09:47 PM by Monte Pittman | 23 comments »

If you have been following along with this, you know that I didn’t get rich this past week. Of course going into a show you have delusions of everyone there leaving with one of your products and you go home with part of their money. Reality says that it is never that easy. I achieved covering the first cost level of the show. What it cost for the booth, expenses to put on the show, etc (this is where you include hired help). The second cost level is the cost of replacing the products t...
