Live edge table, keep bark on - 10 replies

I’m working with some beautiful live edge oak slabs for a coffee table and I’d like to keep the bark on. I’m planing to finish with Rubio monocoat but obviously worried about the bark. Has anyone kept bark on a table before, and if so, any finishing tips/suggestions for the bark edges? Thanks!

Bent steel rod - 12 replies

For my current project, I need to either make or buy a steel rod (probably either 3/8” or 1/2” diameter) with a 90 degree bend in it. I can find all the straight steel rod I could want online or in local stores. Does anyone have any experience with bending rods like this, and if so could you please share! Thanks,Mike

kids in the workshop - 18 replies

My oldest son (just about 7) has considerable interest in anything having to do with building/putting things together. He is constantly taking things apart in order to turn them into something else, and has shown a ton of interest in woodworking projects. For christmas, he received a “real construction kit” which is actually pretty...

rags? - 13 replies

I use rags a decent amount for various tasks in the shop. Usually I buy the t-shirt material rags from Home Depot, but when using these rags to apply/wipe off BLO or for similar tasks, it seems that a bit of the t-shirt material gets left behind. Can anyone recommend an alternative that will not leave anything behind when applying an oil/var...

Reinforcing good safety habits - 10 replies

So I’ve been thinking a bit about how I can be safer in the shop. Since my job as a programmer necessitates that I have most of my fingers, I figure it’s in my best interest to ensure that I keep them all! Since I have not taken any woodworking classes, I feel like I should spend some time researching safety tips. One thing I...

Bent Lamination - 1 reply

I have an idea for a project that will require some bent laminations, so I’m doing some research. There are certainly lots of artciles here and elsewhere on line that have given me a good start. Fire Extinguisher - 13 replies

I’m embarrassed to say that I do not yet have a fire extinguisher, but this week is when that oversight will be rectified. As I understand it, since I do a small amount of working with metal (mostly cutting brass and aluminum), and plan on doing more in the future, I would need an extinguisher that is ABCD rated? Does anyone have sug...

I’m planning a project that will have a strip of aluminum running down the middle, either 1/8” or 1/4” wide and I’m trying to figure out the finishing phase so that i can try it out on a test piece I’m doing. Fellow Jocks, I’m planning a desktop and floating shelves for our home office and light wood has been requested. I think we’ve settled on Curly Maple. I’m working my way towards making my first wooden hand plane. For those of you who have done this and used a brass rod for the wedge pin instead of wood, how do you set the pin? IOW, what keeps it in place? Do you glue it in? Or just make it really tight? I’m kind of at a loss.. Thanks!-Mike

I’m planning out a custom closet for our master bedroom and am having some trouble with how to do certain parts. This is a standard 2-door closet, not a walkin and I think I’ll be using Walnut.
