Typical shop overhead lighting is usually soft, which hides shadows and therefore hides sanding scratches.

Quick tip: When you sand, turn OFF the main overhead lights. Instead, sand under a single hard light - positioned at an angle – so that you can see the sanding scratches much more clearly.
Since doing this, I’ve been able to identify sanding issues before it’s too late.
