Part 1: Rustic Intarsia!

05-25-2019 03:43 PM by justoneofme | 16 comments »

Hi there all my LumberJock buddies! I’m finally getting into my latest project. This Intarsia wall hanging is an art piece that will be donated to our local Hospice for auction (or raffle) ... it hasn’t been decided which yet, but the proceeds will go toward our future Hospice House. This facility is great news and much needed for our Duncan community on Vancouver Island! While working on the design, the idea of a rustic picket fence background came instantly to mind when I spied this ve...

Part 2: Rustic Intarsia

I’m back with some progress made. It’s hard to stay indoors for any length of time when all the wonderful pleasures of Spring beckon me out! This stage of design cutting took approximately 8 hours … spread out over the span of a week or so to complete.Cutting is the easy part! “Intricate” happens when elevation and shaping of all the cut pieces begins. But wanting to clearly see the design, it was time to set everything up on top of my table saw, drawing it close to where I would b...

How many times, pulling pieces apart and fitting them back in place again, does it take before an Intarsia art piece is ready to hang on the wall? A video of my work in progress viewed fast forward would confirm such repetition … a gazillion times … but who’s counting?! At least these chosen photos shouldn’t throw you into that world of boredom!! But repetition is worth mentioning because someone out there in LumberJock Land might be contemplating this particular style of Int...

Life keeps interrupting me! But at least (within this write up ) I can show how far along things got before having to put my Intarsia project on hold. So now that the entire design is secured to its backboard, the time has come to enhance all those edges with ‘rustic’. You’ll notice at the bottom left (photo) how dark that particular edge is. I’m aiming for the same along the top and bottom. Both side edges already look great with scabby paint and old wood blending together. Normally I’m...

Part 5: Rustic Intarsia

After a 3-week painting marathon to beautify our dwelling, then reclaiming my workshop again … I’m finally back to this Rustic Intarsia art piece. Even though it had been put on hold, constant thoughts of shaping the design parts kept momentum driving me forward in anticipation!Experience has taught me to prepare for a projectile or two! When it comes to rough sanding tiny pieces it’s definitely necessary to have a firm grip on things! But … when only the slightest brush agains...

Part 6: Rustic Intarsia

Warning! This blog is a long one … but it’s the last in this series. So I hope you enjoy a favourite beverage while reading or just looking at these photos :) Remember I said something about having an idea I hoped would work? Well … it did!! Never having dabbled in ‘rustic’ painting before now, my methods may seem somewhat unorthodox to those who know better. And truly … I did experience a few inner battles between simple rustic and intricate realism while tackling...
