Turning pinion pine - 3 replies

Does anyone have experience turning pinion pine? I have a friend who’s offered to bring me some from SW Colorado next time he comes through. We were wondering if it looks nice turned and how it behaves. Does anyone know? Would love some feedback. Thanks.Jon

Status of Capt. Eddie Castelin - 6 replies

Being a turner who learned quite a bit from Capt. Eddie and who has also purchased several cutters from him, I’m concerned I can’t find any news on how he’s doing. He hasn’t posted a video for over 3 months and I never see him post anything on Facebook or anywhere else. Does anyone have any news on how he’s doing?

Pneumatic nailer question - 14 replies

I’ve got a 16 ga. Porter Cable finish nailer that went belly up yesterday. The nail striker won’t retract. It has been a very reliable nailer for years so this bums me out in the middle of a commissioned project. I believe it was a model FN250A and I’ve got thousands of nails for it of different lengths. The current model is a ...

Source for nyloc nuts to fit lathe headstock - 10 replies

I’ve seen a video on youtube by a Walt Wager, I believe. He uses large nyloc nuts as the glued-in threads for reusable glue blocks. I like the idea of it but his lathe must be a little different from mine. He uses 1” x 8tpi nylock nuts. My Nova lathe headstock is 1 1/4” x 8tpi and I cannot find any supplier that makes those. ...

Cap'n Eddie - 8 replies

For those who know Cap’n Eddie “Big Guy” Castelin and have wondered why he hasn’t posted any YouTube videos lately, I just found out last night that he’s had a benign brain tumor removed and had some complications but is now recovering and getting therapy. Sounds like he’s had it rough for several months but h...

Air dried black walnut for sale in southern Minnesota - 12 replies

If anyone is interested in about 300 bd ft of black walnut that has been air dried in a shed for years, I have a contact for you. A good farmer friend died recently and his widow and the family have started cleaning out the farm buildings. She asked me what the wood would be worth and I gave her a couple ideas. Most of it is 1 1/4 thick and 10 o...

Baldor 5hp capacitors question - 9 replies

I’ve got a 5 hp Baldor motor that is single phase on my PM66 tablesaw. It stopped running on Saturday. The motor hums briefly before it kicks out the circuit breaker. The motor seems to spin freely. I’m assuming the capacitors are shot or at least one of them is shot. I’ve got the two capacitors out of the motor and they are...

1/2 inch bowl gouge recommendations? - 16 replies

I’m signed up for a bowl turning class in a couple weeks and I have a 3/8” bowl gouge but they request we come with a 1/2” one. I’ve been doing a lot of on-line searching and see many prices and styles and metals. I’m thinking an M4 steel in the $80 price range. Can anyone steer me to something they like? Thanks ...

Lawn mower blade as tool steel? - 12 replies

I’ve heard of using old reciprocating saw blades as a source of thin tool steel. What would be the result if you used an old lawn mowing blade for a thicker profile? It would seem to be a cheap alternative to going and buying tool steel somewhere. Thanks for any advice.Jon

Abranet product problem - 6 replies

I just invested in a couple 50 count packs of 100 and 220 grit Abranet. Was excited to try them after all the hoopla on the web but was disappointed that they would not stay on my Dewalt orbital sander hook and loop pad. They supposedly have the loop material on the back but they came loose after only a few minutes of sanding. Do I have worn ...

Stained Glass re-purpose? - 4 replies

I’ve got a good chance at scoring several good sized stained glass windows from the 50’s that used to be in a church. The leading is bad and to make them usable as is would cost several thousand dollars each. I have absolutely no space for such a haul in my already over crowded shop but I’ve begun daydreaming on what could be d...
