I have finished and refinished many, many pieces and find the least invasive method is usually best. Sanding to remove a finish should be low down on the list of options. It is a good idea to try and identify the finish that is on the piece before anything else is done. A piece that old had either a shellac or varnish finish, most likely shellac. I’m afraid this sounds more critical than I meant for it to, the piece turned out fine.
