Custom knobs for your jigs - 1 reply

made a quick video about how to quickly make custom knobs for your jigs and shop fixtures. It’s my first time making these and I’m using t-nuts. Anyone have any preference for threaded inserts, etc?

Jet Jointer takes off too much..? - 12 replies

It cuts nice and straight, but the in-feed table is as far up as it’ll go, and it’s is still taking too much of a bite. I can’t even bring the table to reach the ‘zero’ mark for depth. . Thoughts?

Portland, OR - 12 replies

I’ll be vacationing here soon. If I was going to Plymouth, MA I’d stop at Peter Follansbee’s shop. If I was going anywhere near Pittsborough, NC I’d stop at the Woodwrights School. So what is a must-see for woodworkers in Portland?

finishing butternut - 3 replies

I’ve got two or so tree’s worth to experiment. and i started today. one side of a board various stains (minwax) and the other a pre-stain conditioner. the straight stains that were lighter did good. darker ones (“special walnut” “ebony” and another) hopped into random pores and made a bunch of little specs ...

finish for butternut / poplar w/ carving..? - 4 replies

so i carved this butternut box. very simple stuff. just practicing. i’m not sure what good options are for the finish. not too shiny. and not changing the color much. the top is not done. changes to come. but it’s poplar. i like the spalting and color. i know it stains BAD. again no funny changes to color.. boiled linseed oil?...

butternut and red cedar - 3 replies

Two woods I haven’t really used much for projects. But I have a lot of both of them – either that I resawed into boards on my bandsaw (cedar) or taken to the sawmill (butternut). I think the cedar is just ‘too much’ to be used on it’s own. Nothing in our house has that much wood grain and it pops out too much. to j...

Black Walnut to the Sawmill - 23 replies

Saw on Craigslist this morning someone taking down 5 black walnut trees and offering them as firewood for whoever wants to pick them up. All about 20-22 inches across and an easy 10 feet of trunk. I found a sawmill 10 miles from the lot being cleared. We figured a fair price for him to drop them off at the sawmill, and the mill said theyR...

i just got this from craigslist. original owner, he bought it in 2001. i got it for $150. i’m stoked on what i think was a good deal, and it’s very timely since i have a LOT of rough cut cedar i put through the bandsaw to joint and plane. two questions.. 1 – i think it vibrates a bit more than is should. i plan on ...

Cedar logs - 12 replies

My parents have a good sized piece of land with plenty of trees they have planted, apparently one was shading the garden too much, so it got taken out. So my dad and I made it into boards best we could with my craftsman 12” bandsaw and a chainsaw. These are pics from the third session of sawing, in total I have a pile about ...

router bits.. and lowes.. - 24 replies

I don’t have a professional shop by any means, just hobby stuff here and there. I recently got a $100 gift card to lowes. and since i just got my first router table set up, i was thinking on getting some router bits. router extension on craftsman saw w/ delta t2 fence - 2 replies

since i start the cut from the side of the fence that doesn’t tighten down, the fence sometimes drifts a little bit. anyone else with the same problem or ideas for a solution? - one obvious solution is to position the fence on the other side of the router table. no biggie, more reaching for me though.. - another, rather inelegant...

Rousseau router plate question - 5 replies

So I got the 2 1/4 triton and the rousseau plate, and installed them in my table saw extension. heading to the store today for a 20 amp switch and the necessaries to make sure sure i don’t have to go under the table to switch it on. i know the rousseau plate has a slight grade to it.. it rises up a bit in the middle. does anyone hav...
