Daddo shim problem - 6 replies

In the pics, you can see each shim has been deformed around the center hole. On one, the edge of the hole has a bulge making it not flat. On the other, a small piece near the center edge has been sheared away. Is this caused by the arbor nut being too tight? Other cause? Perhaps due to the shim sitting in the arbor nut grooves and then getti...

DC output outside - 4 replies

I put my DC outside under cover and its the best move I’ve ever made – quiet and more efficient. At the end of the 6” output I attached a dryer vent to prevent backflow (IE cold air). Unfortunately the hing for the flap on the vent (HD tin version) gets caked with fine dust, and doesn’t close as well. Any suggesti...

Big box store epoxy? - 22 replies

Does anyone use the epoxies from HD? I hate to use my west systems for small dabs because it’s expensive. Gorilla 2 part epoxy perhaps? For what I need it for today, if doesn’t have to overly strong, but may need to be reapplied at some point, so sticking to itself would be a plus

Auto adjusting toggle clamp worth the extra dollars? - 1 reply

I don’t have any toggle clamps, and find myself in need of a couple. I see the basic ones for $5 or so from harbor freight and elsewhere. I also see “auto adjusting” toggle clamps, which run about $25 a piece. Worth while, or complete waste? Also, the medium-size clamps from Bessy / Armor say they fit up to 13/16R...

Wiping varnish with fast dry poly? - 8 replies

I put 2 coats of Watco on my new entry table build. To give it a bit more durability, I made a wiping varnish for the next layers: 1 part BLO, 1.5 parts mineral spirits, 1 part fast dry poly (minwax). I put this on after the Watco was very dry. After applying and letting dry for a day, there is a sheen of oil that sits on top. It’s not...

wood layer layup orientation for strength? - 8 replies

I’m interested in making my own wood handled ice axe – not to scale vertical mountains with, but more of a vanity axe for use while mountaineering in the winter. needs to be strong but won’t be use as a life saving device. The pick is steel and has a neck that extends down ~6” into the wooden handle. i believe this wi...

Grain filling w Danish oil - 6 replies

Given that my walnut grain isn’t filled, nor close to it after 4 sessions, I’m wondering if i am doing it wrong. Can someone point me to some good pics and preferably video that shows A) how thick the sanding slurry should be, B) how long they wait for it to ‘set’ before wiping off, and clearly shows how they wipe off ...

both sides of water stone? - 1 reply

One side of my water stones have writing on them (mfg name, etc). can this be rubbed off, and then used? similarly, any thoughts on using the side of the stone? was thinking it would be useful for really rough use when i didn’t want gouge the main surface.

Coping saw defective? - 3 replies

Just received a new Olson coping saw and am wondering if it is defective and worth returning/exchanging. When viewed from the blade side with the C shaped frame behind it, the blade and support are not parallel. It seems the frame is not really straight. The blade of course is straight since it’s just stretched between 2 points. Is th...

dovetails - clearing out the corner of thin tails - 7 replies

Google failed me! lots of great how-to’s regarding dovetailing on the web, here included. But I am trying to find some references / videos on the best way to clear out the waist when cutting very thin dovetail tails for a half blind drawer. i find that the bottom of the tails, in the corner, is very hard to clean up without the side o...

Dovetail chisel's required? - 1 reply

Am about to do my first set of (half blind) dovetail drawers. Using the 1:7 marker I made as my last project I find the relief area quite narrow on the side pieces – as I’ve seen them in high quality pieces. My question is is a dovetail chisel is commonly part of the tool chest? It seems like a small chisel (3/8” or smalle...

Why make 2 shorter tenons vs on longer one? - 2 replies

I understand the math rules, but am unsure why it would be stronger to have two 2.5 long mortise/tenons vs one 5 inch set. I’m joining 3/4 stretchers into 1.75” entry table legs.

size/thickeness of drawer spacer - 5 replies

I’m building the entry table shown in the first picture. The top is about 40×10 and each of the drawers is about 14×4. My question is regarding the size/thickness of the stretcher pieces that surround the drawer. Smaller is better for this design. Is 1/2” (high for the horizontal pieces, and wide for the vertical ...

knife block - simple slabs or wrap around? - 1 reply

next project – a knife block. i see quite a few which are simply made with planks with grooves cut out and layered up. this is how my current one is (which is too small). I also see some which look like they have an extra piece of wood on the sides, presumably so the multiple joint lines from the stacking process do not show. all est...

face frame stile width when against a wall? - 8 replies

i am putting a large cabinet/pantry at then end of a dead end hallway in my basement. it probably wasn’t the right way, but i built the cabinet box at the space’s maximum width – ie the left and right sides are abutted against the adjoining wall (at least it is at the top, but bottom is off the wall since the wall is way out o...
